Ashes. I carry this remnant of good cheer, which I collect from campfires along my way, to sprinkle into the flames of the next.
Before breaking camp in the morning, when the ashes are cold, I join my troop for a moment of reflection. Then, together, we stir the ashes, and each scout takes some along to mix with his next campfire. Each scout keeps his list of campfires, a memento of happy times.
If more than one scout brings ashes to the same campfire, they combine lists of campfires, pooling their experiences together and sharing their record of campfire dates and places of all the campfires. A legacy to pass along.
We scouts and scouters carry our friendship with us, in these ashes from other campfires, with other comrades in other lands.
May the joining of the dead fires with the leaping flames symbolize once more the unbroken chain that binds Scouts and Guides around the world --- with greetings from Scouts of the United States to Scouts everywhere.
